Hockey Initiation Program (HIP)

HIP is a program for children ages 4 to 8 that have little to no skating experience. (Previously, this was our Basic Skate and Learn to Play programs). HIP focuses on improving skating skills and other basic hockey skills. Participants will learn balance, agility, edge work, forward skating (glide and stride), backward skating, and stopping. They will also learn basic puck handling, passing and shooting. Cross ice scrimmages are added as the season progresses. The goal at this level is to teach fundamental hockey skills for a successful transition into one of the Mite programs.

If you have any questions regarding our HIP program, or if you would like to receive emails, please contact Carrie Wallander (a link to her email is below).

Equipment Available

Manitowoc Hockey has a limited supply of hockey helmets and skates available on a first-come-first-serve basis for use during HIP. Helmets usage is free and skate rental is $1 in the Pro Shop.

*Manitowoc Hockey also has full sets of gear (chest protector, elbow pads, shin guards, breezers, gloves, a stick and a carry bag) available to rent - for a small fee- for those kids that are ready to move into the "hockey" portion of HIP.
The cost to rent a full set of gear is $50 for a full season, plus a $50 deposit. Your deposit will be returned when you return the gear.

USA Hockey and the ADM

Manitowoc Hockey follows USA Hockey's ADM program beginning with the Hockey Initiation Program program. More information can be found on USA Hockey's website.
The ADM is USA Hockey’s nationwide player-development program for youth hockey associations. It’s based on age-appropriate, age-specific competition and training for boys and girls, beginning with their first steps onto the ice and carrying them through age 18 and beyond. The ADM places a heightened emphasis on skill development and long-term athlete development principles, providing a blueprint for the best possible youth hockey experience.
Put simply, it’s doing what’s best for kids.
